Andria, Italy — Frantoio Muraglia has been awarded three Gold Awards at the 2026 NYIOOC World Olive Oil Competition, earning recognition for Essenza Fruttato Intenso, Grand Cru Tenuta Macchia Di Rose and Denocciolato.
Frantoio Muraglia received a Gold for Essenza Fruttato Intenso, a robust monovarietal extra virgin olive oil made from Coratina olives. Marked by a clean note of grass, Essenza Fruttato Intenso reflects the variety’s naturally assertive character and the producer’s emphasis on careful handling of fruit and rapid processing.
The producer also won a Gold for Grand Cru Tenuta Macchia Di Rose, a medium-intensity Coratina monovarietal drawn from a smaller, site-specific production. In earlier reporting, Savino Muraglia described developing the cru over time, tasting and tracking how a distinctive note expressed itself year after year before presenting it as a stand-alone expression intended to be compared with the cru concept more commonly associated with central Italian regions.
A third Gold went to Denocciolato, a robust Coratina extra virgin olive oil made using pitted olives. Frantoio Muraglia has previously explained that removing the stone before milling reduces tannins while preserving polyphenols, a choice that comes at the cost of lower yield but is pursued for sensory balance, shaping a profile that remains fruity and spicy while tempering Coratina’s traditional edge.
Founded in Andria, in the heart of Puglia, Frantoio Muraglia has been run by five generations of master olive oil producers. The Muraglia family’s history in the area stretches back more than a century, with the estate’s olive-growing legacy tied to land assembled by Savino Muraglia’s great-grandfather and anchored by long-lived Coratina trees, including one cited as being 450 years old. Over time, investments in milling capacity and processing speed were aimed at ensuring olives could be transformed quickly after arrival at the mill, protecting freshness and quality.
In 2008, Savino Muraglia returned to the family business after studying and working in finance, shifting the strategy from selling bulk oil toward bottling and labeling under the family name. Alongside production choices, the producer became known for presentation: Frantoio Muraglia worked with local artisans on multi-colored, hand-crafted ceramic bottles that turned packaging into a recognizable signature, later expanding that work by acquiring a local ceramics workshop staffed by artists producing new formats and colors.
Frantoio Muraglia describes its extra virgin olive oils as 100 percent Italian and made from cold-pressed olives, with an approach that combines tradition and innovation. In previous interviews with Olive Oil Times, Savino Muraglia has emphasized sustainability as a practical farm-level commitment, pointing to initiatives connected to carbon farming, research into eco-fertilizers produced through the bio-digestion of byproducts such as pomace and wastewater, and plans that include a growing role for renewable energy.
With the three Gold Awards in 2026, Frantoio Muraglia added to a long record at the competition. Across its full NYIOOC history, Frantoio Muraglia has earned 19 Gold and one Silver awards, including three Gold in 2025, two Gold each year from 2020 through 2024, a Gold in 2019, a Gold and Silver in 2018 and a Gold in 2017.
The results place Frantoio Muraglia among the world’s leading producers. In the Olive Oil Times World Ranking, Frantoio Muraglia is ranked #8 in Italy, #28 in the Northern Hemisphere and #29 Worldwide.
